The Art of Vertical Living: How to Frame Your Small Space
Is your floor plan feeling a little tight? When we look at a room, we often only look at the floor space (the square footage). But at FRAME & FORM, we look up.
If you examine our logo, you’ll see a two-story structure. That’s because the secret to spacious living isn’t just about the floor—it’s about the walls. Here is how to use vertical space to transform a cramped room into an airy sanctuary.
1. Floor-to-Ceiling Shelving
Don’t stop your bookshelves at eye level. Taking storage all the way to the ceiling draws the eye upward, making the ceiling feel higher while providing massive amounts of storage for books, plants, and decor.
2. Hang Your Curtains High
A classic designer trick: mount your curtain rods 4–6 inches above the window frame, or even right against the ceiling molding. This “frames” the window and tricks the brain into thinking the window is larger than it is.
3. The Floating Effect
In small spaces, heavy furniture blocks light and flow. Opt for “floating” pieces—wall-mounted media consoles, floating desks, or sofas with tall, thin legs. Being able to see the floor underneath your furniture makes the room feel wider.
